Powers

Powers

Just about everything you do in City of Heroes is involved with powers. Powers let you run faster, blast fire at foes, and even make your friends more powerful. The concept of powers in this game encompasses all the things other games might call skills, spells, and attacks.

Your Archetype determines what primary and secondary powers you have access to, but everyone has access to up to four power pool sets. Powers and pools open up at specific levels, so don't expect to have all the powers you want right from the start.

Powers fit into a number of categories, and the power's actual icon can give you important information about it. Every power has a picture for an icon which corresponds to the power in some way. For instance, sniper powers have what looks like a bullet for its icon, while fear powers have a skull. On top of that, each power icon can have a border which gives information as to how the power interacts with the player and with villains.

No border around the power icon means it affects you only. This border means it affects teammates only.
This border means it affects a single target. This border means it will affect enemies in a cone in front of you.
This border means it affects a target and the surrounding area. This border means it is a summon or drop.
This border means it affects the area around you. This border means it is a summon or drop that affects an area.
