INDECENT PROPOSAL
SpaceMonkey Puts Us Up on City of Villains' First In-Game Wedding Engagement
It’s your classic boy meets girl tale – well, except for the costumes, capes, plots to take over the world and peals of evil laughter. For Rhode Island’s own SpaceMonkey, age 27, and his soon to be bride Faith, also 27, City of Villains is more than just a game: It’s a special place that will linger on in their memory for years to come.
The first couple to get engaged in real-life via the title (the proposal actually went down in the virtual world), they’re also some of the franchise’s biggest fans. Over the course of their thus far 8-month relationship, these happy lovebirds have spent countless hours together in front of the PC, exploring NCSoft’s award-winning outing hand-in-hand. Playing City of Heroes/Villains isn’t just an occasional escape for these two: it’s a bonding experience that’s helped bring them closer together.
With wedding bells in the air, we couldn’t help but wonder. Will there be an in-game ceremony? Why found one’s marriage upon an MMO? And just what are the chances some misguided do-gooder will attempt to make off with the lucky lady before she walks down the computer-generated aisle?
SpaceMonkey takes time out to answer all these questions and more in an LQGaming Services: exclusive:
LQGaming Services:: Tell us about yourself. Where you'd grow up? How'd you get into gaming? Why City of Heroes/Villains in particular?
SpaceMonkey: I live in Rhode Island. I never really got into online gaming. Back when I was 18, 19 I used to play Quake 2 and that was about it. But one of my best friends bought me City of Heroes the summer before last for my birthday. It seemed like the exact game we’d always dreamed of playing, and within a week I was hooked on it. I’ve been playing ever since. As soon as I found out about City of Villains, I preordered that day.
LQGaming Services:: What sort of characters do you play?
SpaceMonkey: I'm usually on Infinity and my main character in Heroes is a tanker, and in Villains a brute. I've always been headfirst during games like this. I like to just run up and be in the middle of the action, rather than stay in the back. When Villains was coming up, I was in on the beta test, and the fury of the brute just hooked me right away.
"I'm thinking, 'Wow, this is a long command.' ... I look ... and she had her character kneel down in front of mine and she proposed. It was great - it'll definitely stick out in my mind for the rest of my life!"
LQGaming Services:: How'd you meet your fiancée? And how did the game factor into your relationship?
SpaceMonkey: We actually met by chance. We both went to this bar. Both of us had friends who frequented it all the time. One week, she happened to show up and saw me there. She came up, introduced herself. We both were using Yahoo! at the time, and she mentioned that. So later on that night after I got home I tracked her down and starting talking from there. We immediately clicked.
As for how the game came into it, I started spending more and more time over at her house. I brought my copy of the game over so I could install it, play it a little bit while I was there. She saw me playing, liked it, and decided she wanted to play a character herself. By the time she was done with the tutorial, she was hooked…
LQGaming Services:: At this point, how long have you guys been playing City of Heroes?
SpaceMonkey: It’s been about 6 or 7 months. I brought the game over almost right away. At one point she gave me a key to the house. Right around then, I first took the title over. At first, she was using my account and had a character there. Within the past two months, I got her a copy of the game for herself. Then she saw me playing Villains in beta and decided she was going to want that too. Now she has her own accounts in both games.
LQGaming Services:: Was she much of a gamer beforehand?
SpaceMonkey:
This would be the beginning. Her gaming went about as far as poker with friends, Scrabble, things like that. Not really any online or console gaming. City of Heroes/City of Villains is pretty much it for her.
