GDC: City of Heroes/Villains Preview
City of Heroes / City of Villains Issue 7: Manifest Destiny Preview
One of the most awe-inspiring moments of PVP combat in Recluse's Victory takes place when either the villains or heroes gain control over a territory. Instantly the world around you morphs and changes to a shiny Utopian atmosphere (if you're one of the good guys) or a bleak tyrannical landscape if you happen to prefer being on the wrong side of the law. Its no minor special effect - seeing enormous statues, buildings and terrain change seamlessly to fit your faction is an ominous sight to behold.
The last thing that really tickled us was the inclusion of what's called "Mayhem Missions." If you ever wanted to try Grand Theft Auto (sans carjacking) in COV then this feature is for you. Villains engage in a rampage of destroying cars, beating up (but not killing) innocent civilians, blowing up buildings and even springing fellow fiends out of prison. The game's physics engine has been ramped up for the new explosive action. It was great fun to see cars blowing to pieces, watching those pieces collide with other nearby objects and destroying virtually every thing you could lay your hands (or laser beams) on.
Mayhem Missions are instanced, so the catch is you have a limited amount of time to get everything accomplished before you're yanked out. However, you can gain additional time by performing secondary objectives such as destroying a certain number of cars.
Manifest Destiny is on track for release later this spring or early summer and will be free to all players of City of Heroes and City of Villains.
