Codemasters' MMO VP David Solari aims high with Archlord

David Solari, Vice President of MMOs at Codemasters, was kind enough to sit down one-on-one with us at GDC for an exclusive interview about his company's recently announced MMO Archlord. While details surrounding the game are still being finalized, he had a lot to say about the game's unique vision:

LQGaming Services:: Archlord - give us a general overview of the project and what makes this game unique from others.

David Solari: Archlord is a fairly conflict-oriented concept for an MMORPG that has all the great features you'd expect from a fantasy MMO. It's a great big defining feature is that you can become the Archlord. Basically the Archlord has a variety of special abilities and powers, which allow you to reign over the world for a period of time.

Its not that one guy kicks everybody's ass as you might imagine it would be, its much more about guilds behind the person. There's no way one person could become the Archlord with no one watching his back. So it's really a team effort and guild mastery that matters.

LQGaming Services:: What exactly is the process of becoming the "Archlord" in the online world? It involves a guild obviously -- but what does it really take?

David Solari: On that one we're actually looking to drip that information out over time. There is a defined process, but what can I tell you without giving the entire game away? Its about moving certain parts of the world and winning a number of challenges to become the Archlord - that's all I can tell you about it right now.

"There's no way one person could become the Archlord with no one watching his back. So it's really a team effort and guild mastery that matters "
LQGaming Services:: What type of player would be interested in this online world? Someone geared toward PVP or PVE?

David Solari: The game supports both modes of play very well. There's going to be a lot of PVE content. There's also certain parts were you can take place in PVP combat. Taking part in PVP is very important for raising your guild status to the point where you can get into special competitions important to becoming the Archlord. Obviously, becoming the Archlord will be quite PVP-oriented [aside from the] quests you have to carry out to achieve [Archlord status].

Do you think you'll ever get too old for video gaming?

Absolutely, we all have to grow up sometime.

Maybe, when real life demands more of my time.

No way, video gaming will always be an entertainment option for me.

Never, I'm looking forward to pwning my grandkids.

I don't know

Anyway!
