An Exclusive GDC 2006 Interview with Richard Garriott

Question: Are you happy with the new version [of Tabula Rasa] that you've got?

Richard Garriott: Oh totally.

But now everyone in the company now is 100% behind it. We're very confident we have a winner on our hands. The only thing we're not confident of us how fast we can get it out.

We're now literally only in a content game. We've got the first world done, all the missions are done and you can play through the entire first world. It still has a few rough edges we need to polish off, but the point is we have a complete game in hand. Right now scale is the issue.

Question: You mentioned there's going to be more than the three worlds Tabula Rasa wills ship with. Do you have any idea how these new worlds [game expansions] will be distributed down the line? Free or not free?

Richard Garriott: We think our will be free because believe [we're] subscription-based in our current strategy. NCSoft will probably try a lot of models, we don't have any in the works, but there are other business models that would be interesting to explore.

But the specifics of Tabula Rasa our expansion is generally by world. I'm sure there will be things we ramp up, there's some aspects of classes or levels we may save for added modules, but in general the big release for each new phase will be a whole another planet. Which, for us, is a whole other story arc.

As a general theorem, a planet is a story. It's a problem for you to personally solve and graduate from and feel like you've been successful in and then take on another challenge.

Do you think you'll ever get too old for video gaming?

Absolutely, we all have to grow up sometime.

Maybe, when real life demands more of my time.

No way, video gaming will always be an entertainment option for me.

Never, I'm looking forward to pwning my grandkids.

I don't know

Anyway!
