SHOOTING FROM THE HIP
Project Offset brings its maverick approach to MMO's
LQGaming Services:: Sounds like just playing with the tool itself could be as fun as the game you're trying to create. How do you see Red 5’s recent deal with Webzen affecting your collaboration with Red 5?
Rod Green: It’s great news! Red 5 are a great group of guys, and the Webzen have really got their stuff together for the MMO side of things. We’re really excited to be associated with such a prestigious group. This won’t have any affect on our licensing relationship with Red 5.
LQGaming Services:: Will Offset be collaborating more closely with Webzen also?
Rod Green: Not at this stage.
LQGaming Services:: Do you expect your team to grow a lot, or do you plan to keep it small and tight as it is now to maintain your vision of what an Offset produced game should be?
Rod Green: We are expecting a period of growth, however, we will keep it gradual and not expand too large.
We want to keep the company small and tight knit for now.
LQGaming Services:: Independently speaking, lean and mean sounds like the way to go. Are you planning to work exclusively with Red 5 and Webzen, or do you have plans to perhaps license the Offset Engine out to other developers?
Rod Green: We are looking into licensing options with other developers.
However, we are being very selective on whom we license the engine to– it’s important to us we believe in the company and the game they are developing.
LQGaming Services:: Finally, what is your vision for the near and distant future of massive multiplayer online gaming?
Rod Green: We’re really excited about what Red 5 are working on their entry into the MMO market should make quite a splash.
Also my friends at BioWare made an announcement about their intention to release an MMO which should be fantastic. I think the genre is really starting to hit its stride; World of Warcraft created a huge market and opened the gaming world to a much wider audience.
Hopefully this, along with next gen, will usher in a new era for MMOs and games in general. We should start seeing some real creative takes on the traditional genres especially MMOs.
