Worlds on Fire
Codemasters' Community Liaison Officer Kyle "Laeth" Rowley on RF Online
Set in the furthest reaches of a distant galaxy, a long war has been raging between three opposing factions since time immemorial. In Codemasters' RFOnline, players immerse
themselves in this cosmic region, a zone in outer space where science fiction mixes with fantasy, technology challenges magic, and life is locked
with machine in an ultimate struggle of survival of the fittest.
Codemasters launched RFOnline in the North American MMO market earlier this year. Based in
the UK, Codemasters has made a niche for itself by taking Asian-developed MMOs and adapting them for a global market. We recently sat down with Kyle Rowley to talk about his company's latest MMO RFOnline:
LQGaming Services:: For players new to the game, what can you tell us about RF Online?
Kyle "Laeth" Rowley: Oh my. where to start? Well, let's begin with a little back-story. RF Online is set in a distant galaxy, in a sector called Novus. Within this sector there is a planet - appropriately also named Novus - which is the home to 3 distinct factions that have been at war with each other for longer than I care to remember.
First of all you have the Accretia Empire. Technically they're a race of robots with human brains (long story :p), aka Cyborgs! With conquest and destruction as primary objectives, and the destructive weaponry to obtain these objectives - these Cyborgs are not to be messed with.
Then you have the Bellato Union. Renowned across Novus for their exceptional engineering skills, and the ability to build some of the most advanced weaponry, vehicles and buildings throughout the galaxy - the Bellato Union have come to Novus for economical success.
Finally there is the Holy Cora Alliance. The Cora are a spiritual race who, after many years of civil war, united to form the alliance as it stands today. With a strong magical ability The Holy Cora Alliance is a formidable force and shouldn't be underestimated by the other two factions.
"We're really pleased with the amount of support we have received from the community. We've been listening ... and are adapting our approach to certain aspects of the game because of this."
RF Online's most popular feature is it's PvP (Players vs Player) but I'll go into that a little more later on.
LQGaming Services:: How have the first two months of retail been for the team?
Kyle "Laeth" Rowley: Exciting! It's really great too see the game in full swing, and we're looking forward to the coming months. Obviously, there have been a few hiccups here and there - but we're in a learning process and no one gets it perfect first time.
With that said, we're really pleased with the amount of support we have received from the community. We've been listening very closely to what they have to say, and are adapting our approach to certain aspects of the game because of this.
LQGaming Services:: RF Online is already a big game in the East. After the launch in the US, did gamers here tackle challenges and play the game any differently then those in the East?
Kyle "Laeth" Rowley: Obviously because cultures are drastically different in the West to that of the East, players are bound to play the game slightly differently. As the game was originally designed for the East, there are certain aspects that players in the West have had to adapt to - mainly the dedication it takes to evolve your character to your personnel taste.
Players are also encouraged to remove any presumptions they have on MMO's before they start playing RF Online. Mainly because certain aspects of gameplay that would normally be frowned upon in other MMO's are actively encouraged here ;).
