An Interview with EverQuest guild, Resolution from the Firiona Vie server

An Interview with EverQuest guild, Resolution from the Firiona Vie server
Leonai_art - 11/06/2005

Leonai_art sat down with the guild leader of Resolution, one of the most prominant and oldest guilds in EverQuest on the Firiona Vie server.

To start out, could you introduce yourself and your guild?

My gaming name is Rhayannon Tordu'Ore and I am a High Elven Magician. I am the Guild leader of Resolution, which is on the Firiona Vie server.

How long has Resolution been around?

Resolution was has been around since the server Firiona Vie first opened. The guild was found and created by a player who went by the name of Coinfist Heavyhand. We actually still have some of the same members from that era. We are definitely considered old school.

What type of guild would you say Resolution is?

Resolution is a high end raiding guild. With that, we do have many role-players in our ranks, but the purpose of the guild structure is to facilitate raiding. We are a guild that prides ourselves on moral and ethical conduct. We do not cheat or exploit this game. We are proud to be able to say we progressed to where we are by playing the way the game was designed to be played.

How often do you raid?

We have official raids, 5 days a week. However, we do also raid on our off days helping members and applicants obtain their epics, signets, DoN progression events as well as group progression in DoD.

In your opinion, what does it take to have a good raid?

Focus, fun, progression and loot are what it takes to have a good raid. Fun, progression and loot is what seems to be the driving factor for most members. However, focus is what first came to my mind when asked the question. Without complete focus, the rest is hard to achieve. When the guild isn't having fun, I feel like I'm failing them. Being one of the top guilds on this server, what spot we are in matters none and my members know this. As long as they are having fun and we are able to progress while doing this, I am happy. And as long as they are having fun, are able to progress as well as obtaining loot, then they are happy

The members bring it all together though really. Their knowledge of their classes and the basis of Resolution in regard to fun and progression make presenting them with a good raid on leaderships end possible. Our members possess the patience, positive attitudes as well as mutual respect for each other that is needed to keep the peace and harmony within our halls as well as within the community, while keeping in mind that this is a game played to have fun.

In your opinion, what does it take to make a good raid leader?

Dedication to the guild first and foremost is what it takes to make a good raid leader. Proper communication is another important quality one needs. Understanding the members and their desires on a majority type scale and catering to that is a huge asset. A calm temperament, although trying at times to say the least, seems to keep the raid force in good spirits during these moments.

Fast typing is the key to communication, which brings it all together.

Has your server, Firiona Vie, been a benefactor or a curse to the raiding environment?

Both. On the one hand, the lack of no drop makes it easier to deal with loot. Awards don't have to be done on the spot and old gear can be handed down through the ranks. It's more satisfying for members and helps with progression. I call this the trickle down system. The flipside is there being the ability to buy and sell items and characters, for real life cash, and that creates a lot turmoil between guilds as well as in the community. Many guilds, including my own, have been crippled on numerous occasions because of this ability.

Is the rumor true that there was an exodus of members who left for Worlds of Warcraft, and if so, has this caused conflicts within the guild?

In my opinion, every guild on every server has had some exodus to WoW. The latter is probably more common on FV than on other servers because of the role-playing environment that is fostered there. The result was the server merges, but Firiona Vie has not been merged because of its special rule set. On the other hand, we have less raiding guilds than there are on other servers, so this perhaps balances out.

The majority of folks, speaking on behalf of my own experience in Resolution, have come back after leaving for WoW. With WoW, they enjoy it, have fun but once they reach the end levels, they get bored and come back. It was the same with EQ2. Many got bored after a certain amount of time, and return. More I have to say have returned from WoW then EQ2 though.

I've heard by some that running a guild is like having a second full-time job, would you agree?

Yes, absolutely. I would actually consider myself as having 3 full-time jobs. I am a mother of 2 and very active in the daily activities that normal 14 and 11 year olds are doing. Ok, ok so I'm more like a glorified chauffeur, cook and maid who gives constant TLC. I am a business owner as well and work in my shop 2 days a week. And then there is the guild, which takes every other free moment I have. I have a very set schedule, that differs from day to day but it's very set and undoubtedly every day, through out the day. I guess I micromanage my responsibilities in a very productive, beneficial way by prioritizing a nice balance between real life and the game. I don't neglect anyone, anywhere, in real life, or in the game and I still have time for my hobbies

This is where my officers come in. They are a godsend to me. In real life, they would make the best employees. They understand the mechanics of the guild, are self-starters and are skilled in their areas of responsibilities as well as in covering others areas. Aumudn, who is my senior general officer, has been a rock of support. He is wise to the game, the members as well as to me. Stremus and Mastermune are my raid leaders, and although I've lead raids, rarely I might add, they are so skilled and knowledgeable, I couldn't ask for better. Shackleton, who is the Rogue EQLive Correspondent as well, is my junior general officer has such a calm temperament about him that any disputes amongst members, or even outside guildies are always satisfied and comfortable going to him. He is very diplomatic, which is how I am. Kozvar is my Administration Officer and handles all our board management, attendance, and member's activity as well as been picking up on loot awarding. Kiluen was my loot officer and what a fine one he was, however he has since retired and there has been no replacement. We all chip in, but Kozvar has picked up a big chunk of responsibility with it. He is also the Magician EQLive Correspondent. Ayida is my recruitment officer and she is a well-respected pillar in the community and is great with managing our applicants and offering any support to me that I may need. Normad was the go-getting recruitment officer but he has since retired and has yet to be replaced. I am very proud of them all and I couldn't do what I do and be as successful as I am without them and all my members. This is, undoubtedly the best group of members I've had at one time.

As a female gamer and guild leader, have you found any difficulties with harassment and the like centered around the thought that you might not be cut out for the job based purely on gender?

I definitely had many feel that because I was female, I was not cut out to be a guild leader of a hardcore raiding guild. I'll never forget the day that I was asked to take over leadership of the guild. When the announcement was made, there was one member who went completely over the edge. He definitely did not feel I had what it took because of being a female and he made no secret about that. He did stay as a member and ended up becoming one of my officers. I guess he realized he was wrong . I don't think folks would have thought that if Resolution was more of a casual guild versus a raiding guild however. I also think that I set a precedent of sorts for other females to step up into roles of the officers, raid leadership and guild leadership because of what I've done over the past two and a half years of being guild leader and being female.

In this game, at this level, harassment during rivalry is a given. I've received undoubtedly a fair share of harassment; however I do not think it was because I was female. I think if I was male, I would have received the same kind of harassment, however, the names I was called would have been slightly different and more male oriented versus female oriented

Getting back to the guild, what was the best expansion for the guild?

In my opinion, the best as well as the most successful as a guild was definitely PoP. When I took over leadership we were still in SSRA, doing some things in PoP and we had gone from a full raid force down to about 20ish members in a mass exodus to another guild. With that, SSRA wasn't even doable. We had to go a bit backward in targets and heavily recruit. I was offered quite a few guild merges but declined them all. We took no short cuts, recruited hard in order to re-gear and rebuild the guild. This was in June, 2003. Over that next year, my goal was to have Quarm dead before my 1 year of being Guild Leader. And we achieved that, so PoP definitely was my most successful on a personal level and the most challenging as for the guild. In GoD, we were the first guild on FV to obtain Txevu access as well as the first guild on FV to obtain Tacvi access. In OOW we were the first guild to obtain Anguish access. We are also the only guild who obtained Anguish access without exploiting one of the MPG Trials. Success with an expansion, to me is great but getting back to the main question, I do think the best expansion is yet to come. DoD.

Are you recruiting, and if so, what are the minimum requirements?

We are always recruiting. I never, in all my time have closed recruitment. One week we can have 9 rangers and the talk is we don't need any more rangers but then the next week we can be down to 2. I learned over time that closing recruitment to any specific class based on an over abundance only hurts you in the long run.

Each class has its own set of minimum requirements that range from levels to specific AA.

For future and smaller guilds who are looking to become larger, what advice might you give them?

The best advice I could give to an already established guild looking to take it to the next level is to be sure you have already established trust with your members and the community. Without trust, there is little room for long-term success. My success has always been being honest, forthcoming, open and morally and politically correct. Other guild success, in my opinion based it on other factors, but for Resolution, those are the main factors. Loyalty, Honesty, Integrity and Respect. Not only for each other, but for the community as well.

Other guilds can condone theft, disrespect, cheating and exploiting to advance in this game, but will never get the respect I have gotten because of it and its respect that keeps the dedicated type members. For me, to have the ability to say we advanced, progressed and played this game the way it was meant and the way it was designed to be played, without cheating and exploiting is what makes what I do worth every minute...

I am GL of Prophets of the Myst on Fennin Ro. Your interview was wonderful and I have to agree 100 with what you said. Support and trust goes both ways and without it you have nothing. Prophets was built with the support of rl friends and family and as guild leadership was handed to me I have strived to keep the same beliefs and standards. As a guild we take a great deal of pride in accomplishing the impossible which is something that is impossible to do without strong raid leadership communication and trust. I truly admire and respect every member of Prophets past and present. It would not be what it is without all of them. They are the very best. I wish the best to all guilds in their strive for success in the true spirit of the game.
