Faction and You - A down and dirty guide to how to gain faction in DoF
As anyone who has been to the new zones for DoF can tell you, the sheer scale of things can be a bit daunting at first, and while your settling in and looking around you will constantly hear about faction. Here's a guide:
Court of Coin Court of Blades Court of Truth
And the completely different Tears Grifters.
First off, all Courts share the same basic set up. You can get all your spells, all the advanced and essential books for artisans, and even horses, at any of them. The differences are mild. About the biggest differences noticed will be that each Court has a different Arena champion, and each Court gives out different, albeit similar quests. As your faction rises different things become available. Pick one after discussing with your friends, as its better to be together than apart as you gain faction. Unlike city writs its impossible to have faction with more than one court, and if all your friends go another way, it can be a pain to reset it.
Building your faction:
Everyone starts out equal in the eyes of the Courts (sorry about the pun). On the beach in Sinking Sands as you first zone in are representatives of all three major Courts, and the quests they give will get you started on your way to kindly faction. These are repeatable quests of varying ease, but almost all of them are easily completable by anyone over 45, and a well equipped early 40's can do most. These will get you fairly far on your way to Ally faction with the Courts. After doing a certain number of these repeatable quests (and watching your faction bar rise), a new quest will open up. Taking this quest will end your ability to do further quests from the beach and require you to work at your faction in other ways.
The Road to Ally.
Maj'Dul is fairly easy to learn your way around, especially with the in game map SOE has put in, and VERY easy with EQMap. After working your faction of choice (remember, just ONE faction) to a certain stage, travel in the city gets interesting. Opposing faction NPC's will be KoS (Kill on Sight) to you, and many of these are heroic. This is where we are going to work up to Kindly faction. Any person with the label of another Court is open game. Keep an eye out for the cops on carpets as they will join in and quickly knock you about (probably killing you if you miss it) if they catch you at it. Every person with a Coin, Blade, or Truth label drops a Token from the court they are a part of. Collect all you can. It takes roughly 50-60 tokens to go up a tier in faction. Tokens are turned in the a Councilor matching your faction in the Tower of the Moon, located to the right up the first stairs as you zone into Maj'Dul. You can turn them in 1, 5, or 10 at a time. You can raise your faction from 0-Ally just off tokens, but it aint as fun or rewarding as the beach quests early on.
Tears Grifters:
Allied with none, and without a court of their own, Tears Grifters will offer you quite a few adventures within the city itself. Most of these require you to hunt around for residences to enter (gotta mouse over the center of the doors until you find one that highlights) to recover missing items. These short quests pay off in Tokens from the Court of your choice, usually 7 at a time.
Got all that? Its not really all that hard to get to Ally, just a bit time consuming, but the time must be spent to get your apprentice II's from the new levels until Sages get up to the point of making them, and the quests available in the Courts are ONLY available there, including the quest to get a port spell straight to Maj'Dul. They are also the only place to buy the new mounts and get permits to rent the new housing available. Enjoy, and happy hunting.
