Guild User Registration Walkthrough
Guild User Registration Walkthrough
When it comes to having users registering on your site, there are two routes you can take. You can have the users register on the forums initially and then add them to the member list. Or you can remove the register button on the forums and have the users apply with an application, then add them to the member list.
Using the forums to register:
Some guilds prefer to use this method of registration so that they can have the members apply on the forums via a post in a "Recruitment" thread. Doing this leaves all the registration and account setup strictly done on the site itself.
When a user comes onto the site looking to apply to the guild, they will goto the forums and register using the "Register" button at the top of the forum page. They will fill out the required information asked and be given forum access automatically. The user can now go onto the "Recruitment" forum and state their interest for joining the guild, etc. Then the site admin/officer can add them to the Member list using the "Member Manager" in the Admin Pages.
When a user registers using the forums, they get added to the "Registered users" list. Now this can create a problem. If the admin/officer goes to add the user to the forums in the Forum Manager using the same username as what's in the registered user list, it will give a reply saying that there is already a user by that name on the forums. There is a workaround and a possible solution to this.
Workaround: The admin can go into the "Member manager" and click the "Registered users" link and edit the username they wish to add to the forums. Then add a "01" or "_" (or whatever you wish). Doing that will allow you to add the user to the forums in the Forum Manager. The post from the registered list username will display that edited username, but will not be affected by the solution below.
Possible Solution: The admin can go into the registered users link as described above and delete that username. Then adding the user to the forums from the Forum Manager. NOTE: If the user has posted anything on the forums, all posts will be lost from the username that was on the registered user list. So this may not be the solution for you, if you wish to have users apply through the forums, unless that application via the forums is no longer needed.
Removing the Forum Register Button:
Some guilds will use this method if they prefer to have the user fill out an application on the application page (Duh!). Also to stay away from having to do everything mentioned above. This way depends on the use of email to receive the applications, hence not being completely site dependant like the above method.
This is done by having the admin/officer go into the "Registered users" link in the Forum Manager from the Admin Pages. Uncheck the box labeled "Show Register Button". This removes the register button from the forums altogether. Once done, the admin will set up a custom application page (if capable of creating one) or use the provided application page. The provided application page can be edited with custom questions, submission text, etc. from the application page using the "Configure Page" link.
When the user comes to the site to apply, they can goto the application page to fill out the questionnaire. It will be emailed the the email you specify on the configure page link. Then the user can be added to the member list and "Initialized" for forum use in the Forum Manager.
Something to keep in mind:
When a user is added to the member list, their password by default is the same as the username. Meaning, if you enter a user in the member list as "Czya" the users password will be "Czya". And the password to login is Case Sensitive. They will need to have a capitol for the first letter. Also you'll want to have your users change their password as soon as possible, as to keep security on your site.
Conclusion:
These are basic guidelines to registration processes. They can be used as is, or changed to suit your tastes. They can both be used together if you like. Or you can use any other process that you want. But this should help out with some questions on member registrations.
