N.G.E. - A blessing or a curse?

N.G.E. - A blessing or a curse?

N.G.E. Review

November 6th 2005, after a nail-biting wait, I finally managed to log into the Test Center to check out the New Game Enhancements. I didn't know what to expect but I must say I like them a lot!
Han Solo

Forget everything you know about Star Wars Galaxies because the N.G.E. is basicly a new game, with a new and improved combat system, a new profession system and actual quest based advancement (instead of grinding).

You start out in a space station where you will be rescued by Han Solo, Chewie and R2-D2. The whole environment is really immersive and makes you feel like a real Star Wars hero, ready to start the adventure of your life.

The combat system was totally revamped, and it's now very twitch-based and fast paced. No longer can you just set up some über macro and get your Ultra-skillz of AFK Grinding in order to progress. Now you must actually be at the computer and it even requires a lot of concentration to actually do anything worthwhile in combat. You need the correct gear and some decent hand-eye coordination to do well! The new combat system is very similar to Diablo's: a point and click system. Yet some people compare it to FPS, which I understand to a certain extent but which I dont agree with. It rocks in my opinion.Star Wars Combat

Aside from combat, the whole profession system was changed. Unfortunatley you can't be a crafter/fighter hybrid anymore because the new profession system will work more like the class systems in games such as WoW or EQ2. You choose your class and that's it, there's no turning back. That is except with the Profession Restarting Kits Veteran Reward (which allow the player to choose a new class and start it from lvl 1). This is the replacement for the now obsolete Anti-Decay Kits.

There will only be 9 base classes now: Bounty Hunter, Jedi, Smuggler, Officer, Spy, Commando, Entertainer, Trader (crafter) and Medic. They are all pretty self explanatory, you choose your class and then you advance level by level, getting new skills and abilities along with new titles (more on that in our professions guide). The only "different" profession is the Trader, where you must choose one out of four possible specializations: Domestics, Engineering, Structures or Munitions (the specialization will define what you can or cannot craft). Profession Screen

I can't say that I agree with the changes to professions. They remove the diversity the game had and it's strongest point - the fact that you could change profession any time you wanted. But if the developers think it's needed then I'll give it a chance...

Another thing which I don't agree with is the removal of decay. Items won't decay ever again, with or without ADKs. This will hurt the economy because now crafters won't have returning clients and will hurt the players who spent so much time and effort getting their ADKs which will now be converted into Profession Restarting Kits .

NGE QuestingNow, most of the character progression is done with quests which grant XP. It is rumoured that these quests end at Level 30 but I haven't seen a confirmation yet. These quests are really immersive and have great storylines. You won't have to grind to level, just complete quests. That alone makes for more interesting gameplay than the random "kill X mob eating my crops" we did before ad nauseum.

Also with the simplier professions, I think it will be easier to provide balanced PvP, possibly revitalizing the currently dead Galactic Civil War. I'm looking forward to some great PvP battles!

Nothing is perfect but this patch seems to bring us the game they always meant to create - an MMO in the Star Wars Galaxies. Add to that the much more fun combat system at the expense of arguably complicated professions, I think it will be well worth it.

Darth Vader Warns you...

EQ2 at least lets you have a profession AND crafttradeskill at the same time. Oh well I liked the current game for is massive customizations and for its realism. If everyone wants to be a hero - then go play the Star Warss FPSs that are out there. Here I live in the world of Star Wars Galaxies. I doubt in that world EVERYONE is rescued by Han V.

Now that I see the limitations in this systems formatting of comments let me also just say that if you answer you might as well forget trying to use anything but characters or a period. The double letters miss spellings etc from above are do to this system stripping out characters. So to clarify I was saying I doubt everyone in the world is rescued by Han Solo just as everyone in EQ2 is not rescued by Friona. Val.

How could you support such a terrible enhancement to the game First of all the combat is terrible. People who signed up for this game didnt sign up for the FPS styleDiable style combat. You say that people will no longer AFK grind ok fine but now we will be seeing Aim Bots lag hacks etc. that will bring down the game. So we lose those select few who AFK grind but we gain those select few that go down to the level of Aim bots doesnt sound like a great trade. SOE doesnt listen to their players if I wanted to play a game like this I would play Battlefront. Also you failed to mention with Jedi being a starting profession that there will be so many Jedi flooding the servers. If people thought there were a lot before there will be 10X more now. This also eliminates the alpha class. Jedi was the class everyone strived to be and was worth earning. Although I do acknowledge there were many Jedi this is not the solution to the problem. I personally think that Jedi should be rare and powerful. They should be something to rarely be seen and something to be in awe of not a class to be atainable by all at their whim. Also the new UISkill Advancement trees are disgusting even worse than the new icons after the CU. Oh and what about the poor CHBE Where will the be after all of this they are misplaced. salutes. They have dumbed the game down made it simple and bland. This isnt the game so many signed up for it is not something to get excited about. If I wanted this kind of combat I would play Diablo if I wanted these class styles I would play WoW. I do acknowledge you dont agree with several points and I agree with those points you dont agree on.

It makes sense from a marketing standpoint. Diehard starwars fans are outnumbered by people with bad taste and short attention spans. I dont think ill buy the game anymore. I wanted to be a nobody in the starwars universe ive read a ton of books and enjoy the other side of it. the non hero working class part of it. Now its going to be tons of little kids. make two games now theres an idear. hey if were lucky maybe this is just a marketing trick like new coke and coke classic.

This NGE really should have been reserved for SWG II. That way people who enjo*beep* the game in its current state or what was its current state-Pre Publish 25 could enjoy the game still and let the people who enjoy the NGE enjoy it seperate from us. Its a dead game now and I agree with Goodbye SWG whole heartedly.

I just cancelled my two accounts. If I had wanted to play a FPS I would have subscribed to one. This is one vet who has finally had enough

Since NGE came live about 90 of my friends quited game. Remaking a game again and again like SOE did duing these 2 years leads to confusion and frustration. The RPG aspect of the game has been sacrificed to fast action. From what Ive seen so far the result looks different from what SOE might have expected. Servers are emptying due to mass account cancelation. Official forums have been revamped to hide the thousands posts of frustrated players especially those who bought the expansion not knowing such changes were to come and who struggle to get a refund. The new content added is pathetic WoW does 10 times better on this game system. Tweaking a game too much and despising customer base doesnt lead to a new game. It leads to a dead game. RIP SWG

I didnt play before the NGE. I didnt play SWG mostly because I work for a living and have a life. I spoke with many friends that went over... they pla*beep* but when they realized just how much real life time they had to sacrfice to a game to get to where they wanted to be they quit. Honestly I play games to have fun. I dont LIVE in this universe. I live in a 6-230 world and relax the rest of the time. This is my relaxation and Im thankful that I dont have to give up all of my free time just to be the Jedi I wanted to be... You lot would find the many StarWars Reality MUDs a good find.

What SOE has done to SWG is a crime to the gaming community. They are a laughing stock. I was a die hard swg player since November 2003 as soon as the NGE hit that was it. Gameover for me and thousands like me. My 2 accounts cancelled without hesitation. If you read the developers personal blogs you can see they hate this style of game. They personally like the PRE-NGE SWG better. But their blogs get deleted as soon as the community find them and react to them. What a pity SOE did this. I bet their accountants will be in dismay when they see the loss in earnings from thousands of people cancelling their accounts.
