FAQ - General MMOG Phillosophy

18.1.6 Why all the secrecy? Is it to stop a competitor stealing ideas? Is it to give the players a surprise when they start playing? Is it to prevent the spoiler sites publishing their extensive databases prior to launch?

The answer is really 'yes' to all three... it's to protect the developer's ideas from showing up prematurely in another product, it's to help control the release of information to keep up anticipation for the product (e.g. PR/marketing reasons), and it's to keep a lot of the game details revealed in beta away from new players once the game is launched so the game is more fresh and fun for them.
