18.1.16 Should companies provide game expansions for free?

It's extremely unlikely that the one company who puts out free expansions will be able to match the quality of those who do charge for expansions. Something has to pay for the expansion team. Something has to pay for marketing the expansion, getting it into the channel, etc.

This might slowly change as digital distribution becomes a reality, but I still see companies charging for the expansion even if you download it (though the cost could conceivably go down). That, or the monthly charge would go up and everyone pays. Regardless, it takes a lot of time and money to make a great expansion.

Bottom line: people will pay for quality and don't always choose the cheaper or free route in life.
