18.7.3 What about using professional music in the game?

I think it's practically tacked onto my name now that I often say "the game industry parallels the movie industry"...

Sometimes I say it differently... and sometimes I say it in a sad voice while downing the seventeenth Diet Mountain Dew of the day and staring at a beautiful scene in a movie that I wish I could do in real time... but the point remains the same...

Hollywood learned long ago that sound is the (please prepare to groan at the obvious pun) unsung hero of a movie. Often times the most exciting thing about a movie is the sound... you just don't realize it.

The game industry in general, and the MMOG games in particular, haven't done a good enough job of realizing this... but we are catching up fast! Anarchy Online, for one example, used a pretty darn low-tech sound solution, tech wise, but wow did they do a good job...

Certainly sound will be a priority in our game, so...

As far as using professional bands like Pink Floyd... hey who knows? Anybody friends with Rush? Feel free to have 'em email us! *grin* - Ryan Elam, Lead Programmer
