General MMO Slang


Here you can see a Glossary of the common MMO abbreviations/slang. It's useful to use them when chatting in a MMO game or talking about it, so be sure you know what they stand for and understand them all.


Hint: Use ctrl+f to find a specific acronym or slang.

AC - Armor Class

Add - The addition of another Creep attacker to the combat.

afaik - As Far As I Know

AFK - Away From Keyboard

Aggro - Range within a Creep will begin actively attacking the PC.

Aggro Radius / Range - The area around a mob that a player will draw aggro. The difference in level between the mob and player determines the distance. Lower level players draw aggro from further away than higher level players.

AGI - Agility. Attribute. In WoW it increases ranged damage. Increases all classes chance to Critical Hit. Also affects dodge and adds directly to Defense.

AI - Artificial Intelligence. NPCs and mobs have limited AI which dictates how they react to players, other mobs, and other NPCs. For example, in WoW a dying murloc will run to get help from another murloc.

AKA - Also known as

Alt - A player's 'alternate' character or characters that they play when they are 'resting' their 'main' character or want to play something different. Alts are often used to farm and craft to help support the 'main'.

AoE/AE - Area of effect. A type of spell or ability that effects an area instead of a single target.

AP - Attack Power. A stat. As this stat increases your DPS also increases.

AR - Attack Rating. A stat. Part of the equation to determine your likelihood to hit a target. Equal to five times your level plus any bonuses from talents, buffs, items, etc.

Avatar - Another name for your character as it appears in the game.

B - Buying.

Bait - To draw out another player or mob to lure them into a trap. Or, an item used in fishing to increase your skill and hence, your ability to catch fish in a certain location.

BBIAB - Be Back In A Bit

Bind - Equipment can permanently bind to a character either upon acquire or upon equipping. Equipment that is bound to a character cannot be traded, only sold to vendors. Also a term used in reference to your 'home' location. You can bind your character to any inn so that when using your 'hearthstone' you return to that specific inn.

BoA - Bind on Acquire. Any item that is immediately bound to the player when looted or acquired. All quest rewards are BoA. Also called Bind on Pick up.

Bodycount - Type of quest where you have to kill X monsters. "What's the Creep bodycount so far?"

BoE - Bind on Equip. Any item or equipment that is bound to a player once they equip it. These items can be traded if not previously equipped.

BRB - Be Right Back.

BRT - Be right there.

BTW - By The Way

Buff - Helpful spells cast on party members to temporarily increase stats

Bug - Technical game error or glitch.

Calm/Calming - The act of "calming" a mob so that it doesn't attack.

Camp - To sit in one place waiting for a particular monster or type of monster to spawn. "Someone just killed X Creep, so I'm camping his spawn now."

Carebear - A derogatory term for players who don't play Player vs Player often.

Caster - Any character that casts spells as his primary offense or defense. A mage or a priest are both considered casters.

Charm/Charming - The act turning a mob into a pet to help fight on your side.

Clan - (see Guild)

Class - A specific type of character, signifying a role or profession (ie. paladin, mage, priest...).

Combat Pet - An NPC that can be called up and controlled by a PC to fight for them.

Corpse Camping - Not so nice tactic used by PCs in PvP to kill a player as they respawn from death.

Corpse Run - Running back to your corpse after you die.

Crit - Critical hit.

Crowd Control/CC - Methods used to control crowds of mobs like calming, charming, and rooting.

Debuff - A spell type that weakens a PC or mob by lowering their resistances or stats.

Defense - A stat that helps determine whether an attack will hit. Equal to 5x your level plus any bonuses from items, spells, and/or talents.

Designated Looter - Group member chosen by the group leader or the group to loot all mobs killed by the group.

DMG - Damage

DnD - Do Not Disturb. Similar to AFK.

DOT - Damage Over Time.

DPS - Damage per second.

Duel - Two players who have agreed to fight each other.

Emotes - Way of expressing how you feel in the game thru commands that create text or animated reactions from your character.

Exploit - Taking advantage of a glitch or game mechanic to gain an advantage that is not allowed per the terms of use of the game.

Farming - Killing mobs in one zone or instance over and over again to gain XP or loot.

FFA - Free For All. A loot option that allows any party member to loot any mob killed by the party.

FYI - For Your Information

Gank - Killing characters of much lower strength, for the sole purpose of causing them damage.

GG - Good Game or Good Group

Gimp - When an ability/item/character class have its stats decreased or gets worse in any way it's gimped. See also Nerf.

GJ - Good Job.

GL - Good Luck.

GM - Game Master. Typically employed by game company.

Grats/Gratz - Congratulations.

Grief - To cause "grief" by playing unfairly or disrupting the game for others.

Grind/Grinding - Killing mobs over and over to gain XP in lieu of questing.

GTG - Got To Go.

Guild - An organization of players. Guilds typically have a hierarchical structure. Guilds are supported by in-game systems that allow for sharing of resources, experiences, and information with other members.

HF - Have Fun.

HoT - Heal Over Time

HP - Hit Points.

IC - In Character. Used on RolePlay realms to indicate you're behaving from your character's viewpoint.

IMO - In my opinion.

INC - Incoming.

Instance - A 'dungeon' location where only you and/or your party interacts with the mobs within. A different instance is created for each party that enters it.

INT - Intellect. The stat that determines how much mana your character has, and the rate at which you can learn new weapon skills. Also effects the chance to score a critical hit with some spells.

J/K - Just kidding.

KoS - Kill on Sight. The aggro state of between an NPC and a PC of opposing factions.

Lag - Latency experienced during play possibly because of Internet traffic and breakdowns, server-side problems and/or client-side problems.

Leveling - Act of gaining XP by killing mobs or questiong to advance your character. Can also be applied to leveling tradeskills.

LFG - Looking for group.

LFM - Looking for more (if you already have a group that's not full yet).

Link - To link an item in a channel by shift clicking on the item thereby allowing others to see it's stats. Can be used in trade, party, guild, or tell channels.

Link Death - When a PC loses connection to the server.

LMAO - Laughing My Arse Off

LOL - Laugh out loud.

LOM - Low on Mana.

Loot - Any items left on a mob after you kill it.

LOS - Line Of Sight.

Lure - Pulling a caster then running beyond party members to draw caster closer.

Lvl - Level.

Main - Refers to a player's primary character that they play the most.

Mats - Materials. "Making 6 slot bags free, you provide mats."

MMORPG - Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Like WoW.

Mob/Mop - Creep.

Nerf - When an ability/item/character class have its stats decreased or gets worse in any way it's nerfed.

Newbie/Newb/N00b - Generally derogatory term referring to players new to the game or genre.

Ninja - To loot something very quickly before anyone else can take it. "The PC ninjaed the @#!* treasure chest again!"

NP - No Problem.

NPC - Non-Player Characters you can interact with but are controlled by the game.

Nuke/Nuking - Refers to direct damage spells.

NVM - Nevermind.

OMG - Oh My God.

OMW - On my way.

OOC - Out Of Character, used in a role-playing instance where you stop role-playing temporarily.

OTOH - On The Other Hand.

Own / Pwn - To totally dominate another player in a PvP battle. The one who 'owns' the other player is considered to be superior. Often also spelled 'pwns'

PC - Player character. Also Price check. You use this when you want to know how much an item generally sells for.

Peeps - People. "We need more peeps for this dungeon."

PK - Player Killing. Usually used in a negative circumstance, ie: not during PvP.

PPL - People.

Proc - Process on action. An item that has proc will perform some extra ability randomly.

Prolly - Probably.

PST - Please Send Tell. Requesting to talk in a private channel.

Pull - To used a ranged attack to bring a mob to you.

PVE - Player versus enivronment (Same as PVM).

PVM - Player versus mob.

PVP - Player versus player.

Release - Used for clicking release to res at bind stone.

RePop - When a mob spawns after someone's already killed it.

Rez,Res - Resurrection.

RL - Real Life, used when you're refering to your real life as opposed to your character.

Roam/Roamer - Mobs or NPCs that move around from once place or zone to the next.

ROFL - Rolling On Floor Laughing.

Roll - A random number generated for some purpose.

Root/Rooting - A way to stop a mob from moving.

RP - Role-Playing. Playing as though you ARE your character in actions and dialogue.

S> - Selling.

Spawns - The process of mobs appearing when they are created in the world.

Stack - The amount of items which "stack" fitting into one item slot.

Static - Something that doesn't move or a mob that stands still until provoked. Opposite of roam.

STR, AGI, INT, STA, SPI - Strength, Agility, Intelligence, Stamina, Spirit, respectively - various player attributes.

T> - Trading.

Tank - Warrior type player that takes the front line and the bulk of the damage.

Taunt/Taunting - A way to get a mob's aggro.

Thx/Thnx - Thanks.

Toon - A character.

Twink - When you equip a low level character with high level equipment.

TY - Thank You

Uber - Of superior quality. "I have some uber armor to sell."

w00t! / woot! - Exclamation of joy. "w00t! I just killed the elite mob!"

WB - Welcome Back.

Wipe - "We got wiped for the third time tonight". The situation where everyone in a party is killed by mobs, often in an instance. Can also mean "character wipe" - the situation where the gaming company or an error resets one or several characters. This is often done intentionally in test realms, but it also occurs by accident in some MMORPGS, off course causing the greatest frustration to players.

WTB - Willing/want to buy.

WTF - What the fudge? (OK, that's not exactly what it means but we're a PG-rated site)

WTS - Willing/want to sell.

WTT - Willing/want to trade.

XP - Experience Points.

YW - Your Welcome

Zone - A portion of the game/world. Zones are listed on the map and mini-map.
