Coldridge Valley

Coldridge Valley

Coldridge Valley is the Dwarf and Gnome starting area. Both are arguably the least played races Alliance side, but that's what you get when you have women that no sane man would touch. The one thing this area has going for it is that no matter what class you want to play on the Alliance, either a Dwarf or Gnome can be that class. It is also the best protected area of the game, offering mountains on all sides with only one entrance, a cramped and trogg filled cave.

The purpose of this is to tell you just how to get around this starting zone. It is somewhat confusing considering its size. Only Horde areas get larger and more confusing than this area.

Quests

Coldridge Valley, while confusing at times, has pretty much every quest linked in some way. None of the Quest Givers are off of the beaten path, so to speak, so you can find them all with relative ease. Even the mobs are fairly spread out, so you aren't fighting a quest mob and his 2 buddies every time you try to do something.

You start the zone with a nice little cut scene related to your race. This happens every time you make a new character. You can skip it if you just want to play, though.

Your first quest in the area starts at Sten Stoutarm. He is easy to spot since he has the big yellow exclamation point over his head. All quest givers will have these. Occasionally you will find one that has a silver or gray exclamation point, which means they will have a quest for you when you have gained a few levels.

On another note, when you can turn a quest in to a quest giver, they will have a yellow question mark over their head. They will also show up on your minimap. Those that you can't turn in yet have a silver or gray question mark over their head.

Quest - Dwarven Outfitters

What do we have here? You look as though you might need something to keep your hands warm, hm?

I'll tell you what would help: a pair of nice, warm gloves. And, being the kind soul that I am, I'd be more than happy to provide you with a suitable pair. I've one condition, however.

I need you to go get me some wolf meat. Nice arrangement, hm? You bring me some wolf meat, and I'll make sure you don't lose any digits to frostbite. Well, what do you say?

Quest Objectives Sten Stoutarm would like 8 pieces of Tough Wolf Meat.

This is an easy quest. Just go a little south until you see wolves, and start killing them. They don't always drop the meat, but it drops more often than not by a large margin. Once you're done, turn it back into him for 2 more quests and to open up a quest on another character.

Quest - A New Threat

I hope you're here to lend us a hand, rogue. After the last trogg attack, we could use all the help we can get.

I hear the buggers have been popping up all across the lands, and it seems Coldridge Valley is no exception. They've been spotted all over the hills to the southeast and near the frozen lake.

And that's not all, just a few nights ago, they attacked and overran our camp to the west!

We're a bit shorthanded here, lad, and we need strong arms to help drive the troggs back.

Quest Objectives Balir Frosthammer wants you to kill 6 Rockjaw Troggs and 6 Burly Rockjaw Troggs.

This quest is a bit tougher than the wolves, but not a lot. Rockjaw Troggs are easy to find, but the Burly Rockjaw Troggs tend to be a bit more difficult. Just look a little further south from the wolves and you should find them ok.

Quest - Encrypted Rune

While you were helping me out, this rune was given to me to pass on to you. Take some time to read it when you have a chance. I'm thinkin' it came from the rogue trainer Solm. Take a gander at it and go find him inside Anvilmar when you've a chance. Read the Encrypted Rune and speak to Solm Hargrin in Coldridge Valley.

This quest is the class quest given to you after completing your first quest. It is different for every class, though they do share a common theme; go talk to your class trainer.

Quest - Coldridge Valley Mail Delivery

Hm, I don't suppose you'd be willing to do a favor for me, lad? A stack of letters came through the pass today, but I don't have the time to send them along.

They're all addressed to Talin Keeneye. You can find him to the west down the road. He's set up a camp next to the frozen lake.

What do you say?

Quest Objectives Deliver the stack of letters to Talin Keeneye.

This is a simple quest. Just walk along the road heading west, and you will eventually come to a guy in a tent standing in front of a fire. He will give you two more quests to do.

Quest - The Boar Hunter

Nothing like a day of boar hunting, eh?

Though, here in Coldridge Valley, there are so many boars it almost takes the fun out of it. No need to get them charging. They're all angry and ready without any help. In fact, recently, there've been so many boars in the area, it's become dangerous for me to do my daily hunting.

Long story short, if you could help me kill some of the boars, I would appreciate it.

Quest Objectives Talin Keeneye would like you to kill 12 Small Crag Boars.
This is just like the Trogg quest. Just find a few Small Crag Boars wandering around near the camp and you will be able to finish this quest in no time.

The mail you delivered was not all for Talin. He will direct you where to deliver the remainder of the mail.

This is a simple quest. Just walk along the road heading west, and you will eventually come to a guy in a tent standing in front of a fire. He will give you two more quests to do.

Quest - Coldridge Valley Mail Delivery If I remember correctly, Grelin's camp is down the road to the southeast. No doubt he'll be eager to get his mail.

Quest Objectives Deliver the letter to Grelin Whitebeard.

Once again a simple delivery. Just head south along the road and you will come to a camp that Grelin occupies. There are 2 quests near here to do as well, and one is the first timed quest you will come across.

Quest - Scalding Mornbrew Delivery

Gah! I was supposed to get this delicious scalding mornbrew to Durnan Furcutter inside Anvilmar a while ago now, but I had to deliver one to grelin here first. I'll never make it to Anvilmar before the brew runs cold!

You look fast. Maybe you can take it. This cup will only stay hot for five more minutes, and Durnan didn't order "chilly" mornbrew, so get going. Anvilmar is to the northeast, a settlement dug into the mountain. Thanks, Borv, and don't forget to bring me back my mug!

Quest Objectives Take a Scalding Mornbrew to Durnan Furcutter inside Anvilmar before it gets cold in five minutes!

This quest is timed. It is easy though, just head back to Anvilmar. Once there, find Durnan Furcutter near the back of Anvilmar and turn it in. This will put you were you need to be to get 2 more quests.

Quest - Bring Back the Mug

Now that hit the spot! Nothing like a piping hot - nay, SCALDING mornbrew on a cold winter's day to warm your cackles of yer soul.

Here ya go Borv - Be a pal and take this empty mug back to Nori for me, would ya now.

Quest Objectives Return Nori's mug to Nori Pridedrift.
Very simple. Bring the mug back to the place you got the Scalding Mornbrew quest from. But before you do, remember to pick up the other quest now available in Anvilmar. It also wouldn't hurt to see your trainer. You can gain new abilities every even level (2, 4, 6, etc).

Quest - A Refugee's Quandry

We drove the troggs out of Gnomeregan, but then it all went so horribly wrong! Now our home is completely irradiated, and we gnomes have been scattered all over Dun Morogh.

In my haste to get away from the radiation, I lost all my personal belongings and tools. It was the trolls that got them. They stole my chest, my box, and my bucket of bolts! They took them back to their camps southwest of Anvilmar.

I'm no adventurer - could you find my things and bring them here to me, please?

Quest Objectives Bring Felix's Box, Felix's Chest and Felix's Bucket of Bolts to Felix Whindlebolt in Anvilmar.

This quest is probably the first one that has any real difficulty to it. Along the western side of the area you will find a troll camp near a frozen lake. One of the items is here. One of the other items is at a camp to the south of the frozen lake camp, and the last one is near the troll cave, just east of the south western troll camp. This is your first encounter with naturally hostile mobs, so don't just run in and start smashing. Try finding a way to get them to come to you.

If you didn't get it already, you'll want to pick up the quest from Grelin Whitebeard when you return the mug to Nori. Quest - The Troll Cave

My brother Senir and I where sent to different parts of Dun Morogh to investigate the threat posed by the trolls. The Senate has its hands full with the troggs, so they've no need for further annoyances.

From what I've seen, the trolls aren't well situated here in Coldridge Valley-- mostly the southern cave. I'd say that the army will not be necessary. A few strong arms should be more than enough.

Perhaps you'd like to assist in this endeavor? I have the authority to offer compensation for your help.

Quest Objectives Grelin Whitebeard would like you to kill 14 Frostmane Troll Whelps.

This quest works remarkably well with the tool finding quest since you will have to kill trolls to get to the tools. Once again these trolls are naturally hostile, so be careful about just charging in. After you're done you get another troll related quest.

Quest - The Stolen Journal

My journal! They took it away to the cave. The one that had it... it was a big brute with some odd markings on his skin and face. I didn't get a much better look than that.

You've had some luck with the trolls, maybe you could go get it back for me?

Quest Objectives Grelin Whitebeard wants you to kill Grik'nir the Cold, and retrieve his journal.

This is your first experience with a slightly more powerful type of mob, the named mob. Early on the difference between an equal level mob and a named mob can seem fairly large, but the difference goes away fairly quickly. To find him, go into the troll cave, and at the first place you can go in multiple directions, head left and keep straight along this path. You will find him at the bottom of a slope. He is easy as long as you don't bring in more trolls. After you're done you get another quest from Grelin.

Quest - Senir's Observations

I was planning on sending my apprentice to my brother Senir with my report, but I would feel much better were it placed in more... reliable hands. That is, of course, if you wouldn't mind?

Hmm... You'll have to take the tunnel to get out to Kharanos.

Speak with Mountaineer Thalos before going through the tunnel. It's completely infested with troggs now.

Follow the road back to Anvilmar, then keep heading east to the tunnel, Thalos is stationed nearby.

Quest Objectives Speak with Mountaineer Thalos.

Yet another delivery. Just follow the road to the east and you will find this guy easily. He gives you another quest, and a nearby Gnome has a quest for you too.

Quest - Senir's Observations

The troggs in the tunnel are extremely hostile, and haven't shown any hesitation in attacking travelers through the tunnel. You seem though enough, though, so you should probably be safe.

Directions? If you're going to speak with Senir, you'll find him in Kharanos.

Make your way through the tunnel and after you come out on the other side, just keep following the road, it'll run right into Kharanos.

Quest Objectives Deliver Grelin's report to Senir Whitebeared in Kharanos.

Get used to it, there will be a lot more delivery quests in your future. Remember to stop at the Gnome before you leave this area for his quest.

Quest - Supplies to Tannok

Hey! You look like a hearty adventurer. If you're planning on braving the pass, do you suppose you could bring a package to the inn in Kharanos?

You were planning on stopping at the inn, right? If you make it through the pass you'll definitely want to take a breather there.

Anyways, bring this to Tannok Frosthammer, the innkeeper's assistant. I can't get through the pass myself, and it'll be days until a mountaineer escort comes through.

Quest Objectives Deliver the Crate of Inn Supplies to Tannok Frosthammer in Kharanos.

The last quest you can pick up in this area. All it requires is that you go to Kharanos and turn in the box. Simple enough, right? Just pass through the tunnel and follow the road, and you will be there in no time.

NPCs

NPCs can stand for a number of things, but I tend to lean towards Non-Player Character. This pretty much means that no one controls them. They serve many purposes, from guards to just scenery.

Vendors

Pretty straight forward. Vendors buy and sell various items that you can use. They can sell everything from armor to food. Some can even repair your armor.

Adlin Pridedrift

General supplies merchants normally sell food of some sort, water, flint and wood for campfires, ammo for bows and guns, and other assorted things. New Hunters will be seeking this NPC out soon, because you only start with 200 shots.

Durnan Furcutter

Chances are that unless you really like the look of this stuff, you won't be buying it. This early into the game it's generally not the best idea to buy armor. He also allows you to repair your equipment, which is something you will find yourself doing a lot from 1 to 60 and beyond. This guy also gives you the quest Bring Back the Mug.

Quest-Givers

Sten Stoutarm

This is the first NPC that gives you a quest. He also gives you a few additional ones after. He is conveniently located only steps from where you start. The quests he gives are "Dwarven Outfitters", and "Encrypted Rune".

Balir Frosthammer

This NPC's quests become available after you finish Dwarven Outfitters. He is located near Sten Stoutarm. He gives the quests "A New Threat" and "Coldridge Valley Mail Delivery".

Talin Keeneye

Talin is the first quest giver that requires more than a few steps to get to. He is located to the west of the starting area. He gives you the quests "Coldridge Valley Mail Delivery (part 2)" and "The Boar Hunter".

Grelin Whitebeard

Grelin used to be named something similar to Gandalf and used to wear a white pointy hat back in beta, but the old Grelin went the way of Capt. Placeholder and a few other joke NPCs. He gives you the quests "The Troll Cave", "The Stolen Journal", and "Senir's Observations".

Nori Pridedrift

This NPC only has 1 quest. He can be found near Grelin Whitebeard. He gives you the quest "Scalding Mornbrew Delivery".

Felix Whindlebolt

Believe it or not, it's possible to miss this guy's quest. He can be located inside Anvilmar on the western side in the front room. He gives you the quest "A Refugee's Quandry".

Mountaineer Thalos

The second to last guy you will even talk to before you leave this area. He is located to the east of the starting area. He gives you the quest Senir's Observations (part 2).

Hands Springsprocket

This guy gives you the last quest you can get before you leave the starting zone. He is located a bit south/southeast of the way out of this valley. He gives you the quest Supplies to Tannok.

Class Trainers

Class trainers for every dwarf and gnome class are available inside Anvilmar. At every even level (2,4,6,8,etc.) you receive new skills which only your trainer can teach you. The more skills you learn, the more powerful you become. With the "Encrypted Rune" quest, you will receive some kind of rune (varies by class) that gives you a small description of your class and was sent by your class trainer. Remember to seek your trainer out, complete the quest and then return to him/her every even level to receive new training.

Warlock and Demon Trainer
Alamar Grimm and Wren Darkspring

If you need to train yourself or your imp, Alamar and Wren are the people to talk to. They can be found at the top of the stairs at the back of Anvilmar.

Warrior Trainer
Thran Khorman

Thran teaches young Warriors all they need to know about their job. He can be found inside of Anvilmar in the main room.

Hunter Trainer
Thorgas Grimson

Thorgas teaches you everything you need to know about your new Hunter. He can be found inside of Anvilmar.

Priest Trainer
Branstock Khalder

Branstock, winner of Azeroth's weirdest name given to you by your mother contest, is also the priest trainer for new priests. He can be found inside of Anvilmar.

Mage Trainer
Marryk Nurribit

Marryk teaches those going down the path of the arcane how to start out. He can be found inside of Anvilmar.

Rogue Trainer
Solm Hargrin

Solm is the guy to talk to if you plan to lead a roguish life. He can be found inside of Anvilmar.

Mobs of Coldridge

Ragged Young Wolf
Beast
Level 1-2

These wolves are your first target. They can be found just south of the starting area.

Rockjaw Trogg & Burly Rockjaw Trogg
Humanoid
Level 1 & 2-3

Troggs are really nothing special. They are your first humanoids at least. They are the second type of mob you have to kill in a killing quest. They range all over Coldridge Valley.

Small Crag Boar
Beast
Level 2-3

The third type of mob related to a killing quest. These can be found all along the western edge of the valley.

Frost Troll Whelps & Frostmane Novice
Humanoid
Level 3-4, 4

Though the Whelps are nothing special, the Novices are your first encounter with a mob that casts a spell. They can be found along the western side of the valley and in a cave on the southern end of the valley.

Grik'nir the Cold
Humanoid
Level 5

The first "Special" mob you encounter. Occasionally there are single mobs related to quests. These are referred to by a number of names, such as named or boss mobs. He can be found at the back of the troll cave in the valley.
