Shadowglen

or those players starting their adventures in Azeroth as a Night Elf, you start on the world tree of Teldrassil, in the small area of
Shadowglen. This is a nice remote corner of the habitable area of the tree near the top. Don't jump off... that first step will be your last!
The purpose of this guide is to help you navigate your way through this area so you can get on with the game and interact with the rest of the world of Azeroth. It's a pretty benign and pretty area so making your way through it shouldn't be hard... and even less so with this guide.
Quests
Some people can get easily disoriented in this area even though it is one of the smallest starting zones. The problem being is that there is a road leading up from the tree of Aldrassil that gives you a feeling of 'north' when in fact it is to the south. Keep that in mind and it will help you through this guide.
As with every starting zone you get to hear and see a nice cut scene giving a brief history of your chosen race. The Night Elves have a fascinating history and the cut scene also explains the World Tree so it may be worth your while to watch it if you're not familiar with it.
Conservator Ilthalaine wil be waiting for you when you first arrive in Shadowglen. He'll be the purple guy right in front of you with a yellow exclamation point over his head and a look of concerned constipation on his face. The yellow exclamation mark means he has a quest for you. If it's silver, then he has a quest but you aren't high enough in level to do it... yet.
On another note, when you can turn a quest in to a quest giver, they will have a yellow question mark over their head. They will also show up on your minimap as a yellow dot to help you find them again. Those that you can't turn in your quest to yet have a silver question mark over their head.
Quest - Balance of Nature
Greetings, [name]. I am Conservator Ilthalaine. My purpose in Shadowglen is to ensure that the balance of nature is maintained.
The spring rains were particularly heavy this year, causing some of the forest's beasts to flourish while others suffered.
Unfortunately, the nightsaber and thistle boar populations grew too large. Shadowglen can only produce so much food for the beasts. Journey forth, young [class], and thin the boar and saber populations, so that nature's harmony will be restored.
Quest Objectives
Kill 7 Young Nightsabers and 4 Young Thistle Boars and return to Conservator Ilthalaine.
Ah the ever popular 'we love nature so much we want you to go kill animals' quest. Not a hard one, the area south of Aldrassil is crawling with the buggers. It won't take you long to dispatch all you need and be sure to sell your loot before you return to Ilthalaine because odds are you'll have a full bag.
Quest - A Good Friend
A friend of mine named Iverron usually visits me at the same time every day. The strange thing is that he hasn't been by at all today -- he's several hours late, in fact.
I admit, I'm a little worried, [name]. Iverron spends a lot of time over by the cave to the north, and I'm sure you know how dangerous it is there -- spiders everywhere!
If you happen to be going that way though, will you keep an eye out for him?
Quest Objectives
Find Iverron by the cave to the north
Sounds simple enough, and you'll find Iverron west of the cave in a little area between two small hills. But the spiders here are aggro so keep to the west as you approach the cave to avoid them if you're still too low a level.
Quest - The Woodland Protector
Thank goodness you are here, [class]. Strange news has traveled to me through the whisperings of the forest spirits.
The mysterious woodland protector, Tarindrella, has returned to Shadowglen. The dryad's presence has not been felt in the forests of Kalimdor in years. Something is surely amiss if she has traveled back to this land.
Seek out Tarindrella and see what business she tends to in our grove. One of the Sentinels reported seeing her to the southwest of Aldrassil.
Quest Objectives
Seek out the dryad known as Tarindrella.
This is the easiest type of quest... with the least amount of xp reward. Just follow the instructions and you'll find Tarindrella in short order. She's not far away at all. And she will continue you on your quest.
Quest - Etched Sigil
This sigil was given to me by a messenger from our hunter trainer, Ayanna. It seems Ayanna would have words with you when you have a moment. Read it and bring it to her afterwards.
Quest Objectives
Read the Etched Sigil and speak to Ayanna Everstride at the top of Aldrassil in Shadowglen.
Of course while this example says 'hunter', yours will refer to whatever class you have chosen and the person to speak to will be the trainer for that class. This is to help you find your trainer so you know how to improve your character as the game progresses.
Quest - The Woodland Protector - Part 2
Something evil is brewing in the forests of Teldrassil. Look long the hills to where the peaceful furbolgs used to dwell. They have left their homes and are amassing under the name of the Gnarlpine tribe.
Only the corruption of wicked Fel Moss could cause such a transformation. The grells and grellkin have infested the area and are threatening the residents of Shadowglen.
Engage these grells and grellkin, [name], and see if they are indeed caught under the enchantment of the wicked Fel Moss.
Quest Objectives
Collect 8 Fell Moss and bring them to Tarindrella.
This is a fun quest because all the little grells and grellkin are so happy about being attacked. They literally skip towards you to retaliate. The only concern here is getting killed because you are so distracted laughing at the little buggers. You can find them in the western section of Shadowglen.
Quest - A friend in need
Ughhh... I was bitten very badly by a spider named Githyiss the Vile while exploring the spider cave very close to here. I am sure I have been seriously poisoned: you must help me.
Please tell Dirania Silvershine. She will be able to help me.
Quest Objectives
Speak to Dirania Silvershine in Shadowglen.
This is the continuation of "A Good Friend" quest. You can rest assured you'll be back here again. For now, just go back to Dirania for the next step.
Quest - Iverron's Antidote
We may be able to help Iverron, as I know of an antidote that should help with the poison. It requires some ingredients, though, before I can make it.

I'll need Hyacinth mushrooms. You can find these growing under trees, or you may collect them from the grell south of here: they seem to have taken a liking to them. I'll also need Moonpetal lillies, which only grow around watery pools.
The last ingredient may prove the most difficult. From the very spiders that poisoned Iverron, collect Webwood Ichor.
Quest Objectives
Collect 7 Hyacinth Mushrooms, 4 Moonpetal Lillies, and 1 Webwood Ichor for Dirania Silvershine in Shadowglen.
The next step for curing Iverron. This is a collection quest and quite easy. You can find enough of the spiders outside of the cave to collect the ichor safely. The other items are exactly where she says they are and easy to collect. Your cursor will turn into a 'gear' when you find the Lillies or Mushrooms so just right-click to collect them.
Quest - Webwood Venom
I came to Shadowglen to observe the webwood spiders that dwell in the Shadowthread Cave. They are cousin to a much smaller variety of spider; I believe the world tree has a profound effect on them, and I would like specimens to study to confirm this.
First, I would like some of their venom. Gather Webwood venom sacs from the spiders in and around the Shadowthread Cave, to the north. I can then examine them for similarities with their smaller cousin's venom.
Quest Objectives
Bring 10 Webwood Venom Sacs to Gilshalan Windwalker at Aldrassil.
Since the previous quest listed involves spiders, it would behoove you to do this one at the same time. Kill 2 spiders with one stone... so to speak. Try not to aggro more than one or two at a time and you should be fine.
Quest - Iverron's Antidote - Part 2
The antidote is ready, [name]. Please see that Iverron drinks it.
There is something you should know -- the antidote -- it will only remain viable for 5 minutes. You must get it to him in time.
Quest Objectives
Bring Iverron's Antidote to Iverron before the time limit is up. Iverron can be found by the cave to the north.
The final step of the quests between Iverron and Dirania. Don't let the timer scare you. It should take less than 1 minute to get to Iverron so as long as you don't take any long detours you'll be find... and so will he!
Quest - Webwood Egg
Now that I have the spiders' venom, I would like some live specimens to study. Unfortunately, capturing a living, giant spider is more than I can ask of you, young [class]. And a giant spider is more than I could handle myself.
But if you can find an unhatched egg, delivering specimens will be much easier, and I can then arrange for the unhatched spiders to be contained.
There must be a nest deep in the Shadowthread Cave. Please, search for an egg in the nest, and return it to me.
Quest Objectives
Bring a Webwood Egg to Gilshalan in Aldrassil.
The next step of the spider-line from Gilshalan, this one brings you far into the back of the Shadowthread Cave. But by this point that should be of no concern for you. Find the collection of big egg sacs, retrieve an egg, and bring it on back.
Quest - Tenaron's Summons
[name], is it? I heard that Tenaron has been asking for you. You can find him in the highest room atop Aldrassil.
We may live long lives, but it's best you not keep him waiting too long.
Quest Objectives
Speak with Tenaron Stormgrip atop Aldrassil in Shadowglen.
Uh oh... the big guy wants to see you! What could this be about? Best head up the ramp to find out.
Quest - Crown of the Earth
It is time for you to seek out your destiny, [name]. But before you are ready to set out into the world beyond our enchanted forests, there is much you must learn about our recent history.
Much has changed with our people since the Battle of Mount Hyjal. Nordrassil lies a pale shadow of what it once was, its power used to defeat Archimonde and drive back the Burning Legion...
There is a task you must perform. Go to the Moonwell north of Aldrassil and return me a phial of its water.
Quest Objectives
Fill the Crystal Phial and return it back to Tenaron Stormgrip atop Aldrassil.
Fortunately Shadowglen is a not a huge area, so all these delivery and message quests don't take too long. Go northeast to find the Moonwell and right click on the phial Tenaron gave you to fill it.
Quest - Crown of the Earth - Part 2
While there is more I could speak to you of the moonwell and of Teldrassil, I must send you along. Corithras Moonrage will be expecting you. I have poured the phial of water you brought to me into this vessel for you to bring to him.
Seek out Corithras. You will find him at the moonwell in Dolanaar. Follow the road south from Aldrassil out of Shadowglen, and continue to follow the cobblestones as the road turns west.
Mind you stay on the road though, [name]. There are dangerous beasts in the forests of late.
Quest Objectives
Bring the Partially Filled Vessel to Corithras Moonrage in Dolanaar.
Looks like you're done with the n00b zone! Congratulations... but wait... just one more thing before you leave Shadowglen:
Quest - Dolanaar Delivery
Greetings, young [class]. Can you offer me aid? I have a package of herbs that I must deliver to Dolanaar. But I still have business with the druids of Shadowglen and cannot yet leave.
Can you deliver this package for me? It must be sent to Innkeeper Keldamyr, at the Dolanaar Inn. It lies along the road to the south.
Quest Objectives
Bring the Dolanaar Delivery to Innkeeper Keldamyr.
Ah, another delivery. Since you're going to Dolanaar anyways, a great way to grab a little extra XP. You are now officially finished with Shadowglen. One little advanced tip tho... you'll see a satyr along the road on your way to Dolanaar... don't take his quest. Now don't say I didn't warn you!
NPCs
NPCs are Non-Player Characters. Or simply stated, characters in the game that are not controlled by players but by the game itself. They are used in MMORPGs for giving quests, selling items, set decoration, and helping to bring the world to life.
Vendors
Pretty straight forward. Vendors buy and sell various items that you can use. They can sell everything from armor to food. Some can even repair your armor. Most can be found in the base of the tree Aldrassil.
 |
Lyrai
General Supplies
General supplies merchants normally sell food of some sort, water, flint and wood for campfires, ammo for bows and guns, and other assorted things. New Hunters will be seeking this NPC out soon, because you only start with 200 shots.
|
Freja Nightwing
Cloth and Leather Armor Merchant
Chances are that unless you really like the look of this stuff, you won't be buying it. This early into the game it's generally not the best idea to buy armor. She does however repair your equipment, which is something you will find yourself doing a lot from 1 to 60 and beyond.
|
 |
 |
Dellylah
Food & Drink Vendor
You guessed it, she sells food and drink. If you're a charge in type of player you may need her services. If you take things carefully you most likely will not. Food and Drink only serve to heal and regen mana.
|
Andiss
Armorer and Shieldcrafter
Another one to repair your damage. If you have some extra cash you may find something worth buying here, but at this level you're better off saving your silver for training and such.
|
 |
 |
Janna Brightmoon
Clothier
If you're a cloth wearer then this is who you need to see. But as with any armor vendors at this level, you're better off waiting for drops or quest rewards and saving your money.
|
Keina
Bowyer
You'll probably be visiting Keina a lot. She's one of the closest vendors (just inside the entrance to the base of Aldrassil) AND she repairs your gear so she's a popular gal. And if you're a hunter that likes to use a LOT of arrows, she'll be able to sell you more.
|
 |
 |
Khardan Proudblade
Weaponsmith
This 'dapper-dan' is easily the best-dressed in Aldrassil. Not sure why a weaponsmith would be dressed all fancy but it seems to work for him.
|
Quest-Givers
Dirania Silvershine
Dirania is Iverron's friend. Not so much a friend that she'll go look when he's missing... but she will send you. She gives you the quest "A Good Friend" and one of the follow-ups "Iverron's Antidote"> You'll find her by the cooking area just to the east of the south face of Aldrassil.
|
 |
 |
Gilshalan Windwalker
Gilshalan is at the base of the ramp that leads to the upper levels of Aldrassil. He sends you into the spider cave for "Webwood Venom" and "Webwood Egg". Finally, he'll let you know when Tenaron is ready to see you with the quest "Tenaron's Summons".
|
Conservator Ilthalaine
Ilthalaine is the first NPC you'll see when you arrive in Shadowglen and he starts you off on your adventures. If you decide you don't like anything... then he's the one to blame. ;) You get the ever popular "Balance of Nature" quest line from him.
|
 |
 |
Iverron
Iverron is the only NPC that isn't handy right around Aldrassil. To find him you should head west then north (to avoid the spiders). He's sitting on the ground in a little inlet west of the spider cave. He'll give you the quest "A Friend in Need" which continues a line from Dirania. He's been poisoned by a spider and needs you to save him!
|
Melithar Staghelm
Melithar is standing right at the entrance to the base of Aldrassil. He'll send you to find Tarindella the dryad in the quest "The Woodland Protector".
|
 |
 |
Porthanius
Porthanius is the last person you deal with before leaving Shadowglen. He's along the road heading south from Aldrissil out towards Dolanaar. His quest, "Dolanaar Delivery", is a simple one that sends you to Dolanaar... which just happens to be where you're already heading.
|
Tarindrella
The first dryad you get to see and deal with, Tarindrella is not far to the southwest of Aldrassil. She's trying to figure outo what's driving the Furbolg's mad and of course the only way to do that is to ask you to do the dirty work in the continuation of "The Woodland Protector".
|
 |
 |
Tenaron Stormgrip
The head honcho of Shadowglen is of course in the highest part of Aldrassil. They've put a railing up to help avoid the numerous unintentional suicides off the side of the tree... bugger that. He sends you for water from the moonwell in the quest "The Crown of the Earth" and then off to Dolanaar with it in the continuation of the same quest.
|
Class Trainers
To progress in the World of Warcraft you need training. From level 1 to 60 you'll want to know where your trainer is as soon as possible. For the Shadowglen zone it's pretty easy. Roam around the tree Aldrassil long enough and you're bound to run into him or her. Trainers teach you new skills that you will need as your adventures take you to more and more fascinating and dangerous areas.
Hunter Trainer
Ayanna Everstride
Hunters can find their trainer, Ayanna, inside the tree of Aldrassil. Same as every trainer. Yes, this is going to be redundant.
|
 |
 |
Rogue Trainer
Frahun Shadewhisper
Frahun teaches you everything a new Rogue needs to know about defeating the lower level mobs. He's in... wait for it... Aldrassil!
|
Warrior Trainer
Alyissia
A Warrior can always use new tricks with his/her weapon so you'll want to seek out Alyssia in Aldrassil.
|
 |
 |
Priest Trainer
Shanda
If you're a Priest in need of training I bet you don't know where to go! Well, go to Alrassil! Shanda is your trainer there.
|
Druid Trainer
Mardant Strongoak
Druids need to learn a ton and in Shadowglen their teacher is Mardant who is in the upper area of Aldrassil.
|
 |
Mobs of Shadowglen
 |
Young Thistle Boar
Beast
Level 1-2
Young Thistle Boars litter the area south of Aldrassil. Their scream is worse than their bite.
|
Young Nightsaber
Beast
Level 1-2
You can find these south of Aldrassil as well. They're not as plentiful but they have a quick respawn.
|
 |
 |
Thistle Boar
Beast
Level 2-3
Same as the Young Thistle Boar but a smidge higher in level, these can be found mostly due east of Aldrassil.
|
Mangy Nightsaber
Beast
Level 2-3
Just like the Young Nightsabers can be found around Young Thistle Boars, Mangy Nightsabers can be found around regular Thistle Boars. East of the tree.
|
 |
 |
Grell & Grellkin
Humanoid
Level 2-3 & 3-4
These happy-go-lucky imp looking buggers can be found to the southwest and west of the zone. You can't miss them when they start skipping. Try not to laugh too hard you forget to fight back.
|
Webwood Spider
Beast
Level 3-4
Found to the north-northwest in and around the only cave in the zone, these guys are aggro which means they'll attack first and ask questions to your corpse. Be careful you don't pull too many at once.
|
 |

Githyiss The Vile
Beast
Level 5
A nasty Spider deep in the Shadowthread Cave, Githyiss The Vile has no quest attached to him that requires you to kill him. But he's the highest level mob in Shadowglen and the only named one so you KNOW you just HAVE to do it. C'mon... DO IT!
